Muppet Zen

Ever since Sara Cox played it as a jingle when she sat in as presenter for the Radio 2 breakfast show over Easter, I've had a song in my head. An earworm that loops over and over if I'm going for a run, or appears out-of-nowhere in snippets when I'm least expecting it.

'Life's a Happy Song' by The Muppets.

Growing up, I was never a big fan of American puppets. In fact, hearing that chorus every weekday for two weeks was the first time I'd ever come across that song.

I guess it struck a nerve because there's this phrase that Tammy uses a lot. Whilst I'm deep into planning the next big thing or a bit pissed off with my present lot in life, she'll often square me up by saying, 'Chris - just look at what you've got right in front of you.'

I've watched the video of that song a fair few times since I first heard it. You should too - if only that it will guarantee to put a big smile on your face.

But also for another reason.

The Muppets were originally created as teachers, and this particular song teaches us two important things that we'd do well to embrace:

Firstly, the important things in life are not those that we haven't yet got, but those which we already have.

And secondly, what we really need is not more money, more accomplishments, an upgraded smartphone or more Facebook likes, but - simply- each other.
